The RJWAS has requested the government to provide financial assistance to the workers during the closure period. The closure will affect the livelihood of over 100,000 workers in the textile industry. These units have a total production capacity of 1 lakh meters per day. There are about 3,500 rapier jacquard weaving units in and around Surat, with a total of 20,000 machines.
The closure is due to the drop in demand and the rising cost of production.
